The Prince of Prints thrives in living color

Emilio Pucci

An accomplished skier, Emilio Pucci's career in design began after a friend was photographed wearing one of his ski suits on the slopes of Zermatt in 1947. The photographer? Toni Frissell of Harper's Bazaar. Certain Pucci's designs would enrapture the modern, active woman, the magazine asked him to design a line of skiwear for a story they would publish the following winter. In 1950, Pucci opened his boutique in Capri and started designing clothes that reached beyond active wear into all aspects of a woman's daily life, including brilliantly patterned dresses and scarves that would adorn the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

"Gaiety is one of the most important elements I brought to fashion. I brought it through color."
