Banana Republic was founded in Mill Valley, California in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler. The brand's image was originally built around a safari theme but was given a more upscale, mainstream makeover after being purchased by The Gap in 1983. The company now operates internationally and offers a full range of men's and women's clothing, shoes, and accessories.
