American clothing retailer Gap was founded in 1969 by Donald G. Fisher and Doris F. Fisher. Originally a shop selling Levi's and LPs in San Francisco, Gap began to offer private-label merchandise in 1974 after expanding to multiple locations across America. Today, Gap Inc. is one of the world's largest apparel retailers, owning a number of popular chains including Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Piperlime.
